I
sraeli & Palestinian inhabitants are mostly Jews and Muslims, and some of them use their religion to fuel the on going political conflict. I believe that it could be helpful to leave the theological aspects out of the discussions, in order to make the debates more concrete and pragmatic, and to realise that the differences are not as big as it might seem.

As a former Israeli and as an Atheist that comes from a religious Jewish family, this topic concerns me. I started my project by making a comparison between the social rules in the Torah and Quran, the holiest books for Judaism and Islam. This comparison should serve as a tool for dialogue that examines the similarities and differences in the social ethics of both sides.

In my project I tried to convey the comparison to different people through different mediums, such as publishing the comparison online and in a printed format, or making workshops with Jewish and Muslim participants. Through these attempts I was able to examine the way this tool is perceived by Jews, Muslims and the outside observers whilst trying to create a dialogue.

“Go not to Wittenberg” - in the footsteps of the Jewish

Jacob looks at the heavenly ladder
…Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And behold, the LORD stood above it and said: “I am the LORD God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants.”

The WITTENBERG_PALACE is an oasis in which one spends a moment and dips into a Biblical time.
You rest on oriental pillows, enjoy the scent of myrrh and incense, quench your thirst with crystal clear water, fresh mint and taste almonds, dates and figs. Is that a harp or lute I can hear?
You read the Old Testament, the foundation of the Torah, and observe paintings of the angels that artists have been concerned with for centuries. You open your senses and become part of this world of myths, angels and dreams.


Abraham is the common ancestor of the monotheistic religions.
He is the ancestor of the Israelites and the Ishmaelites.
Angels appear as messengers and preachers of God in the Torah, the Bible and the Koran.
The struggle with God, concerning faith, preoccupies all of us.
Where do our roots lie? Who are we? Where are we going? What connects us to others? What knowledge do I personally have about the Jewish people and their history, their religion?
What images are created before my eyes?

Painting workshops on the subjects of angels and dreams will be held in July in the KulturBotschaft, in close association with the WITTENBERG_PALACE, and in cooperation with the ‘Historische Farbenküche’ (historical paint kitchen). For dates and registration see www.kulturbotschaft.info

Perhaps the bird Zev will appear, headed to the Stadtkirche (town and parish church), and show the picture ‘Jacob's dream of the ladder’ by an unknown painter from around 1615.

Outside the church, your view drifting towards the sky, you don’t believe your eyes, as you discover a sandstone relief, the ‘Judensau’ (‘Jewish sow’).

Due to the Reformation that originated here 500 years ago, Wittenberg is a ‘place of Christianity’, a pilgrimage site and a national symbol, and was even a synonym for progress and scholarship during Shakespeare's times (hence why he located Prince Hamlet to study here).

The main building and ‘base camp’ of the KulturBotschaft - Dialog der Weltanschauungen (dialogue of worldviews) lies directly opposite the town and parish church of St. Mary’s, the building adjacent to Luther's pulpit, but already belongs to the ‘Jewish quarter’. The Judensau, a disgrace to the mocking of the Jews, is a heavy legacy for the ‘Lutherstadt’ (Luther town), but also, of course, the entire Protestant church, from whom a position is called for. This offensive ‘Judensau’ sculpture which has been at the church for more than 700 years (!), cries out for an examination of Jewish history in Wittenberg - as well as a very personal confrontation with the Jewish.
A gateway to the past is forced open, with a focus on a search for the dissenters, the disadvantaged and the voiceless (heretics, women, foreigners ...)
 
‘500 years of the posting of the theses’ offers the opportunity to wake Wittenberg from its slumber with a kiss of life, well beyond the Reformation anniversary

I learnt that the names are different in German and English, which is really confusing! I was worried it was a difference between Jewish and Christian naming conventions for the same texts, but it seems to be the difference is between English and German.

In ihrer Dissertationsschrift „Afrokultur. Der Raum zwischen gestern und morgen“ bringt die Wissenschaftlerin, Kuratorin und Aktivistin Natasha A. Kelly über die Biografien von W.E.B. Du Bois, Audre Lorde und May Ayim Schwarze deutsche Geschichte, ihre Gegenwart und Zukunft in einen globalen Zusammenhang und schreibt damit eine intellektuelle Tradition fort. Dabei zeigt Kelly anhand sprachlicher, visueller und kognitiver „Ent_Wahrnehmungsgeschichten“, inwieweit der deutsche Kolonialismus ungebrochen andauert, sich in Gesellschaft und Medien widerspiegelt und eine Schwarze Perspektive auf die Welt verunmöglicht. So bleiben die Lehren Anton Wilhlem Amos, Schwarzer Philosoph des 18. Jahrhunderts, vielen Menschen unbekannt, wenngleich sie schon in den 1960er Jahren vom Lateinischen ins Deutsche, Englische und Französische übersetzt wurden.

Natasha A. Kelly ist promovierte Kommunikationswissenschaftlerin und Soziologin mit den Forschungsschwerpunkten (Post-)Kolonialismus und Feminismus. Die in London geborene und in Deutschland sozialisierte Panafrikanistin versteht sich selbst als „akademische Aktivistin“, die stets versucht Theorie und Praxis miteinander zu verbinden. Die Autorin und Dozentin hat an zahlreichen privaten und staatlichen Einrichtungen in Deutschland und Österreich gelehrt und referiert und ist seit vielen Jahren in der Schwarzen deutschen Community engagiert.

Portal into the past / Tracing the paths for mystic clues
Creating the KulturBotschaft’s infrastructure (on site). The real location of the KulturBotschaft and its localization in the surface topography of the monument "Historic Wittenberg" works as an interface to the past, a few meters from the Town Church.

 

 

 The projects “Portal into the past / Tracing the paths for mystic clues” (“Tor zur Vergangenheit ”) and the open civic theatre project Wittenberg Rhizom as  “Future from Wittenberg (2nd part)” were forming the principal pillars.

The White Mountain: For the board of trustees of the foundation KulturBotschaft we aim at winning personalities from most different social levels with outstanding credits and completely  arbitrary reasons of choice. We are approaching " future experts" through our socio-cultural projects, going from macro-to-micro, and back, chosing the neighbours child, the local teacher or philosopher, the regional celebrity to the topmost superstars by choice of heart :

“Public” and “non-public” persons, who stand for their independent way of thinking and intellectual or artistic analysis and dispute, are being asked to get involved as “Ambassadors of Culture” (“KulturBotschafter”) - to initiate a  dialogue of Enlightenment and putting aside ideologies.

The KulturBotschaft stands up as an institution and a permanent representative for tolerance, dialogue  and peaceful dispute, not only on-site opposite the Town Church in the historical old town of Wittenberg, but also virtually and spiritually.

The KulturBotschaft supports the thought of a united Europe following the ancient idea of universality. For this purpose we will recruit a representative "board of trustees", offering the framework for an exchange of personalities from very different social areas.

 

 

 One of the first members in our curatorium, Dr. Karamba Diaby, helped makingFuture From Wittenberg a great success.
Initial point is look at the living conditions of citizens in the area from different social classes and age groups.

How is everyday life in Saxony-Anhalt? Which problems do the people of the region have to face? What are they dreaming about? What are their  goals that they try to achieve?
The perception of one's own city shall be documented with various media. The documentation will try to avoid the typical stereotypes of small towns as well as Eastern Germany and "the Ossis". All of this should show just how much more Wittenberg is than just a historical setting.

In our project, this central question is explored in relation to the city and Wittenberg’s region. Contrary to scientific practice, we will not explicitly ask scientifically trained experts for information, but the local experts: citizens of Wittenberg. We searched for visions and answers together.
